Mary in Scripture and Tradition - A Catholic Presentation of Marian Doctrine
Introduction What a Christian makes of Mary reveals more about his theology than almost any other question he can be asked. This is not because Marian doctrine is central to the Gospel. Catholics do not claim it is. The disagreements about her turn out, on inspection, to be disagreements about almost everything else: the nature of Scripture, the authority of tradition, the scope of redemption, and the communion of the living and the dead. Indeed, Catholics themselves have not always presented Marian devotion well; exaggeration and romanticism can obscure what the doctrines are meant to protect. For many Protestants, Marian doctrines appear to have little biblical foundation and are an elaborate edifice built on human tradition rather than Scripture. For Catholics, these doctrines are grounded in Scripture, illuminated by apostolic tradition, and developed across centuries of theological reflection. Most Protestant challenges are not disputes about individual texts. More often, they a...

ReplyDeleteI dunno. Is England capable of putting together that many wins?
ReplyDeleteOf course!
DeleteAs Alan Shearer said:
"This World Cup is only just getting started, but England are where we want them to be - comfortably into the last 16, and the only problems Gareth Southgate has right now are good ones ...
We looked lively in the forward positions and our midfield was strong, plus the defence did whatever was asked of them - the same as in each of our three games in Group B.
The team are full of belief, which is great to see, and we look like we are in a good place in every way.
I am happy with what I've seen - and excited about what is to come."
Congratulations on yesterday's result.
USA is undoubtedly capable of putting together that many draws. It is entirely possible that the world will be lulled to sleep and awake on Dec 18th to find team USA in the final.
DeleteAlan Shearer surely never saw the draw against the Yanks. (That sounds rather verbise for Shearer...I'm thinking that somebody scripted it for him.)
DeleteHow low can the C of E establishment go:

“Just as the Advent season (celebrating the coming of Christ) got underway, news came of the Church of England advising parishes to consider rescheduling carol services in order to avoid a clash, as someone put it, between the Three Lions and the Three Kings – assuming England will get that far.”
Yes, Jack saw that on the Church Support Hub:
ReplyDelete"On the 18th December, Churches often hold Carol Services in the afternoon or evening, and this could still be possible if you choose the time carefully…but what if there are penalties?! It may be best to avoid that day altogether and host a carol service on Saturday 17th instead."

If the target audience for carol services is the unchurched, maybe it's better to avoid clashes. Otherwise, it's a bit sad that the CofE assumes that its members will put football before God, although to be fair the CofE puts everything else before God and the student is not greater than the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that in the spirit of fairness the Carol service is probably the one service that people who don't normally go to church attend and whilst it may not be the best evangelical tool, you may ot want to compete with the football particularly if England are in the final.
DeleteYes it looks disrespectful in some ways, but perhaps it's simply dealing with the reality of the situation?
Maybe we are at risk of leaping on to a bash the CofE bandwagon??
Yes, if it's a service for non-churchgoers, it's probably best to avoid clashing with the World Cup (not that I even knew it was on this year until I saw all the posts here!).
DeleteI imagine it's probably too late for churches that scheduled carol services for the 18th to change them now, though, especially if they've been advertised locally.
USA OUT!
ReplyDeleteNot really surprising .... 😈
