O Come, Redeemer Of The Earth

O Come, Redeemer of the earth, and manifest thy virgin-birth. 

Let every age in wonder fall: such birth befits the God of all. 

Begotten of no human will but of the Spirit, Thou art still the Word of God in flesh arrayed, the promised fruit to man displayed. 

The Virgin’s womb that burden gained, its virgin honour still unstained. 

The banners there of virtue glow; God in his temple dwells below. 

Proceeding from His chamber free that royal home of purity a giant in twofold substance one, rejoicing now His course to run. 

O equal to the Father, Thou! gird on Thy fleshly mantle now; the weakness of our mortal state with deathless might invigorate. 

Thy cradle here shall glitter bright, and darkness breathe a newer light where endless faith shall shine serene and twilight never intervene.  

All praise, eternal Son, to Thee, whose advent sets Thy people free, whom, with the Father, we adore, and Holy Ghost, for evermore. 

Amen.

The first year of ministry after his ordination in 1951 brought Father Joseph Ratzinger to the Munich parish of  Heilig Blut  (Precious Blood). During the Nazi regime, this parish had two lay martyrs, Ludwig Baron Leonrod and Franz Sperr, and two priest martyrs, Hermann Josef Wehrle and Alfred Delp, SJ. Thanks to Ray Sunshine for bringing this to HJ's attention and apologies for mistakenly deleting his comment.  There were dramatic scenes in Brussels on Tuesday at the "National Conservatism Conference" offering " a harbinger of what a police state in the heart of Europe might look like,"  according to the Catholic Herald . After the conference began, local Brussels police arrived at the Claridge building hosting the conference, and proceeded set up barricades in front of the event venue, preventing any further attendees, journalists or speakers from accessing the event. Eric Zemmous, the French politician, who was due to appear at the conference but was barred from entering when he turned up, said the city’s left-wing mayor had deployed the police like a “private militia” to stop a conservative conference from happening in Brussels.
